Former US President Barack Obama has received the Freedom of the City of Dublin. Obama was awarded by the city’s Lord Mayor Ray McAdam at a ceremony in the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin on Thursday.
Other notable people who have received the honour include John F. Kennedy, Nelson Mandela, and Greta Thunberg. Former US President Barack Obama is expected to formally accept the Freedom of Dublin at a ceremony in the Mansion House this week, nearly eight years after he and his wife Michelle were first awarded the honour by Dublin City Council in 2017. While Michelle Obama won’t be in attendance, the event is set to take place on Thursday ahead of the former president’s talk in the Arena. The Freedom of the City is Dublin’s highest civic honour, previously awarded to figures such as Nelson Mandela, John F. Kennedy, U2 and Greta Thunberg.
Lord Mayor Ray McAdam said the ceremony will fulfill the original decision made by councillors and marks a chance to officially recognize Obama’s global contributions to leadership and public service.
