Concern, The Future Of News: AI

During a panel discussion at NAB Show New York titled “The Future of News: AI, New Revenues and Risks, and the Policy Response,” new research revealed widespread public concern about artificial intelligence and its growing role in news creation and distribution.

The national survey, conducted by OnMessage Inc., found that 76% of Americans are concerned about AI stealing or reproducing journalism and local news stories without permission – including 51% who are “very concerned.” In addition, 77% support congressional action to make such practices illegal, with nearly 60% strongly in favor.

Public skepticism toward AI-generated content was also evident: only 26% of respondents said they trust information produced by AI, while 68% deemed it untrustworthy. Meanwhile, 72% believe the federal government should establish guardrails to protect consumers from AI misuse.

“This data reflects a real and growing concern among Americans that AI could erode the integrity of journalism and undermine the trusted connection between broadcasters and the communities we serve,” said NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt. “Scraping broadcasters’ content without permission or compensation strips away context and threatens the credibility of local news.”

LeGeyt emphasized that NAB Show New York marks the start of a broader national conversation about ensuring technology supports, rather than exploits, trusted journalism. Panelists also discussed the financial pressures facing local newsrooms, where shrinking margins, high production costs, and content misappropriation by AI systems threaten the long-term sustainability of community-based reporting.
