More than five years after the singer shot Megan Thee Stallion in the foot, an appeals court has rejected his bid to overturn his conviction and his 10-year prison sentence. In 2022, the singer, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was found guilty of shooting Megan in the foot during a drunken argument on a Hollywood Hills street. A California appellate court affirmed the verdict in a ruling issued Wednesday, Billboard reported.
“Peterson contends the trial court committed a number of errors,” the appeals court wrote. “We find no prejudicial error and, accordingly, affirm Peterson’s conviction.” The 12 July 2020, shooting happened as a driver was taking Lanez, Megan and her assistant/friend from a party at Kylie Jenner’s house. According to prosecutors, when Megan got out of a vehicle and began walking away, Lanez shouted “Dance, b**ch!” and fired a gun at her feet, striking her once.
Lanez has long maintained his innocence, claiming there was insufficient proof that he was the shooter, and that he received an unfair trial. Following the incident, Megan told police she had cut her foot stepping on broken glass, but days later, she alleged that she had been shot. Lanez was charged with the shooting in October 2022. Lanez and his supporters have called the guilty verdict a “miscarriage of justice”. His legal team has filed multiple forms of appeal to challenge the verdict, each of which has been rejected.
