Mariah Carey has expressed her delight over All I Want for Christmas Is You making history on the music charts. Earlier this week, editors at Billboard announced that the 1994 holiday hit has broken the record for the longest-running number one song on the Hot 100 by staying on the list for 20 weeks. In an interview with the publication published on Wednesday, Mariah said that it was “amazing” news.

“Honestly, it really is. I can’t lie,” the music superstar smiled, admitting that she had “no idea” the track would have such longevity when she co-wrote it with collaborator Walter Afanasieff. “That just became such a thing that I never could have predicted it ever.”  However, Mariah conceded that she doesn’t think All I Want for Christmas Is You will extend its record-breaking run much further. “Yeah, but at a certain point it’s not Christmas anymore, and you know, well, but I love it. I’m about to get to my holiday destination and go enjoy the holidays myself because I’m putting on this Christmas show,” the Believe hitmaker continued.

Mariah originally recorded All I Want for Christmas Is You for her fourth studio album, Merry Christmas. Considered a festive standard, the track is the best-selling Christmas song of all time in the U.S. and was selected to be included in the National Recording Registry by officials at the Library of Congress in 2023. Mariah, 56, recently performed a string of concerts as part of her Mariah Carey’s Christmas Time residency in Las Vegas.
