The Bill Gay Show Atlanta Classic Hits & Talk Radio

By Phoenix Ascar. Publicist
In a milestone that resonates far beyond the airwaves, The National Black Radio Hall of Fame (NBRHOF) has released a groundbreaking publication that is already being hailed as one of the most important media history projects of our time.
Titled The Encyclopedia of Black Radio: Black Radio’s History, Pioneers and Technology, the new book—available now on Amazon—documents over a century of African American excellence in radio broadcasting, technology, and culture.
At the helm of this monumental project is Mrs. Martha Washington George, widely recognized as the only living African-American female historian of Black Radio. Known in broadcasting circles as the “Radio Lady,” George has spent decades chronicling the evolution of Black voices on the radio dial. Her passion and scholarship are the driving force behind the Encyclopedia, which she led on behalf of the NBRHOF as both Project Manager and Lead Author.
“BlackRadio didn’t just entertain — it empowered,” George said. “It mobilized communities, launched movements, and gave a voice to the voiceless. This encyclopedia ensures those stories are never forgotten.”
Honoring Unsung Heroes
The book features an expansive catalog of entries spotlighting radio pioneers, on-air personalities, producers, station owners, executives, and innovators who played vital roles in shaping the national broadcast landscape from the early 1900’s to today. It’s a richly researched, deeply human account of determination, artistry, and advocacy—narratives that, until now, have largely been absent from mainstream archives.
The encyclopedia is not only historical but also inspirational, with entries showcasing figures who broke barriers, challenged norms, and made space for future generations in an industry that long resisted inclusive representation.
A Mission Rooted in Representation
Founded by broadcasting legend Bernie Hayes, the NBRHOF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit headquartered in St. Louis. The organization was born from a pressing need: to preserve and promote the rich legacy of African Americans in radio—a legacy that has too often been overlooked or erased.
Through exhibits, educational programs, and now publications like this Encyclopedia, the Hall of Fame serves as a vital cultural institution, ensuring that the voices of the past continue to inform and inspire the future.
Ms. Phoenix Ascar, a publicist and contributing writer and editor to the project, worked closely with Mrs. Marsha Washington George in shaping the Encyclopedia. “This book is a testament to every unsung hero who lit up the airwaves,” said Ascar. “It’s a work of love, dedication, and legacy. It’s about making sure our stories are not just told, but preserved and honored.”
Mrs. Terri Stephenson also played a crucial role as editor, ensuring the quality and clarity of the final work.
The Work Continues
Far from being a final word, the Encyclopedia is part of an ongoing historical project spearheaded by Mrs. Marsha Washington George and the NBRHOF. Future editions will include even more entries as new research unfolds and additional contributors join the mission. The organization is calling on the public to support this effort by purchasing the book, sharing the news, and donating to support upcoming editions.
Proceeds from book sales will fund scholarships and initiatives, helping students pursue careers in communications, journalism, and media.
