Ohio Players are one of the greatest bands in American history. Funk pioneers whose music defined a generation and shaped modern Hip-Hop, are back in the spotlight. Following the passing of longtime members Clarence “Chet” Willis and Robert “Kuumba” Jones, fans and artists alike are asking for recognition for a band that delivered both commercial success and significant cultural influence.

  • 17 Top 40 hits, including classics like Skin Tight, Fire, Love Rollercoaster.
  • 3 Platinum and 5 Gold albums across Westbound and Mercury Records eras.
  • Among the most sampled bands in history, fueling tracks by Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Ice-T, Jay-Z, Outkast, The Notorious B.I.G., 2Pac, Mary J. Blige

Viral Moment, Timeless Music

This weekend, an unearthed 1974 clip of “I Want to Be Free” from a Midnight Special concert resurfaced on the official Ohio Players Instagram page, amassing over 280,000 views in a day. The reel sparked thousands of comments and drew engagement across the culture: Hip-Hop legends Redman, E-40, Tech N9ne, Salaam Remi, R&B icons Dawn Robinson (En Vogue), El DeBarge, Karyn White, CeCe Peniston, Fantastic Negrito, comedians D.L. Hughley, Marlon Wayans, Karlous Miller, rock legend Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers, and producer Arthur Baker, along with journalists and activists from the NAACP showed their support.

The groundswell has reignited requests for Ohio Players’ Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction, recognition many fans suggest is long overdue.

“Initially, when I thought about it, I said we’re not Rock and Roll, but then after they put the Beastie Boys and everybody else in, I said, ‘What is the problem? It’s right here in Cleveland, Ohio” – James “Diamond” Williams.

Today, only two core members remain: James “Diamond” Williams (drummer) and Billy Beck (keyboards) from the Mercury line up. Both continue to represent the Ohio Players’ legacy on stage with a new ten piece band, determined to keep the fire burning. Diamond is available for interviews to discuss the Ohio Players’ unmatched influence, the viral surge of support, and the ongoing fight for recognition.
