Cumulus Media announces that its Huntsville, AL, CHR station 104.3 WZYP held a successful toy drive to bring a smile to children in communities devastated by tornadoes that swept the area on December 10th. As the one-month anniversary approached, WZYP Program Director/Afternoon Host, Steve Smith, and WZYP Morning Host, Mojo, joined forces with Bobby Ray of Huntsville’s Toys for Tots organization to give affected families in these communities an extra Christmas, rallying listeners to donate over 2,000 toys in a January 11th collection event at the station.
On January 12th, WZYP staff loaded the toys into a large WZYP box truck and delivered them to children in two of the hardest hit towns, Dawson Springs, KY, and Mayfield, KY. Prior to their arrival, they arranged for a local church in Dawson Springs and the Cajun Navy relief group in Mayfield to distribute the toys in their respective communities.
Steve Smith, WZYP Program Director/Afternoon Host, recounts: “I shared the details on when we would arrive with both towns’ Tornado Recovery Facebook groups, and we had a crowd waiting for us at both locations. It’s been over a month since the tornadoes hit and the national media attention has faded, but there are still great needs in these towns. The WZYP team was glad to do our part to make some kids smile. It was such a great feeling to roll into the towns in our station truck knowing we were about to provide some much-needed happiness!”
