(From WISH-TV8, Indianapolis) Jay Johnson, a renowned broadcaster who spent over 50 years in radio and television, has died at the age of 78 after a long illness. Johnson, known as “Super Jay,” began his career in 1968 and worked at several stations, including Chicago’s WVON, where he helped cement the station’s role as a premier platform for Black culture and community. He later became program director at Indianapolis’ WTLC, where he transformed the station into a top-rated leader and helped make it a beacon for the Black community.
Johnson hosted the public affairs program Black Focus on WISH-TV. Johnson’s career also included national roles with ABC Radio Networks and Westwood One. He received numerous awards and honors, including Billboard’s Announcer and Program Director of the Year. See Jay Johnson WISH-TV8 tribute here.
